When Adam came to Alabama last year, he found a restaurant on his way home from a shopping trip. When he rang me later that evening, he could not stop talking about the food, the experience and the atmosphere.
Lambert’s Cafe. Three sites in the US; we visited the one in Foley. No reservations. No credit cards. Just turn up and wait.
All that Adam kept telling me was that they threw bread at you and you had to shout up if you wanted some… to be honest, I didn’t really believe him. We queued for around 10 minutes to get in and were taken through to the far seating area. The restaurant was split into three big seating areas; all full and buzzing with a variety of people. Our drinks arrived and they were bigger than my head! Huge!
A server pushed a trolley round into our area and bellowed “Hot Rolls!”. The other diners then responded with hands up and shouting back. I made eye contact with the server and nodded, avoiding any unnecessary shouting. He threw a roll at me, not gently either. Warm, soft bread rolls…Adam was right! They were amazing!
As we were eating our meals, other servers came round with large bowls of additional extras; fried potatoes, pasta, fried okra, beans and much more. All of these were included in the experience and they piled them up on the plate. There were a few surprises within the restaurant but I wouldn’t want to spoil that for anyone who might visit
We paid $42 dollars for our meal, tip included, and came home with a take out box for enough food for the next day. When we stepped out of the restaurant, people were now queuing outside and around the corner!
