Starting on the List

We are in Mobile, AL for Adam’s work.  We are becoming more aware that we are not holiday so we are trying to eat more home cooked meals rather than going out.  When we are on holiday, we eat out every night.  As nice as it can be, it also costs more.  We have decided to eat out once (maybe twice) each week.  We still want to experience what food the USA has to offer us.  If we have friends and family over, we want to be able to take them to places we have tried and approved!

We decided to head out for some food last night.  Quite often we find ourselves driving or walking until we find somewhere that has something we fancy on the menu.  This can be great when you find a good place to eat, but not so good if the food isn’t that great and the online reviews we read afterwards are rubbish!

Last night we went to Kitchen on George.  This restaurant is #1 on the Tripadvisor restaurant list for Mobile.  We know that not everyone likes using the reviews.  I don’t always review everywhere we go so I presume that is the same for others too.  I generally write a review if the food is either outstanding or rubbish……I hardly ever review the ‘in the middle’ good food restaurants.  Anyway, with over 500 restaurants in the city, we have made the decision to work our way down the list.

Where better to start than number 1!

A little bit of French, Cajun & Voodoo…

We wanted to make the most of Adam’s week off so I booked a night in New Orleans. For us, New Orleans is only a couple of hours away, which is quite cool. A trip to New Orleans also means that we get to be in three States in the space of 2 hours; Alabama, Missisippi and Louisiana.

I had read quite a lot about the French Quarter and quite fancied staying over somewhere near this area. The architecture in the guide books was lush and it looked like a quaint little village rather than a large city! I managed to find a guest house, right on Bourbon St, which seemed to be the main street running through the French Quarter. We arrived, parked up and were amazed by the building straight away. Vintage tiled floors, a grand staircase and delicate wrought iron external fixings. Lafitte Guest House was easy to get to and even easier to check in.  Our room wasn’t ready straight away as we had arrived quite early.  The man at the desk recommended that we tried a place a few doors down for the best Po-Boys in town.

Malls…of the Antique Kind

The last few trips to the US have involved us researching and finding some of the best Antiques Malls within the areas we have stayed.  The last time we went to Las Vegas, we came home with milk jugs, christmas decorations and football pennants.  The things we buy are never ‘worth’ a lot of money but are the quirky little things that we like to have in our home.  It also amazes me that some of the drinks themed objects we have bought for a few dollars, can be found at 5 times the price in the UK!  Hence the reason we always have to buy an extra suitcase for our return journeys.

We went for a drive around Mobile to see what we could find and we came across a small antique store.  The large iron door gave the impression that it was closed but we tried anyway and in we went.  Many people might have walked in and straight back out again.

The Wonderful World of the Throwed Roll

When Adam came to Alabama last year, he found a restaurant on his way home from a shopping trip.  When he rang me later that evening, he could not stop talking about the food, the experience and the atmosphere.

Lambert’s Cafe.  Three sites in the US; we visited the one in Foley.  No reservations.  No credit cards.  Just turn up and wait.

All that Adam kept telling me was that they threw bread at you and you had to shout up if you wanted some… to be honest, I didn’t really believe him.

We’re Off to Alabama!

Soooooo……in ten days we are jetting off to start a little American adventure! 😀

Adam has been seconded to Mobile, Alabama to share his expertise…..it sounds very swish and fancy!

I will be going with him but due to visa restrictions, I can’t work…… oh dear!

We have everything just about ready and we now need to pack.  We have decided to stick to one suitcase each and anything else we need, we can buy it over in the States.

We love exploring, so we will be blogging about most things we do/visit.  Enjoy keeping in touch with us!

Houston here we come!

After filling our faces with the breakfast from Sara’s (eggs, fresh fruit, muffins, waffles, toast!!), we jumped on the number 50 and headed into a misty Downtown Houston.
We started to wander around and look for something to do. Our obvious first choice was to head for the shops, however we couldn’t find any! I seemed to get the feeling that Houston is more of a business city as wherever we walked, there just seemed to be offices upon offices upon offices. We then saw signs for the network of underground tunnels, which pretty much link all of the main buildings. Again, very few shops were in the tunnels but they were jammed with places to eat! Once the cities lunch hour started the tunnels were heaving with city slickers…once the lunch hour was over, the tunnels were quiet. Very bizarre!
However, the lack of shops didn’t stop us exploring Houston. We walked through a lovely small park, tried to find Chinatown, tried to walk in Sam Houston park (it was closed) and tried to visit a couple of museums (they also close on Mondays!). Even though we didn’t have a list of things we had ‘seen’ and ‘done’, I had still enjoyed exploring the other parts that not everyone might go to. We also walked about 4 miles and I got pink shoulders!

We headed back to Houston Heights but got off our bus further up the road so that we could wander around the neighbourhood. To be honest, I got more satisfaction wandering around these parts than the city. We found an old thrift store and a couple of interesting antique furniture shops. The thing I loved the most, and I am beginning to see this in most places that we visit, is the contrast in culture and architecture as you walk along one street. There are huge Victorian mansions which look like they are part of a movie set….and then there are small wooden shack houses that have great personality and character; a real mix of American culture.
