Sunday Sevens 2018 #5

So we are more than half way through the year and I’m only on my fifth Sunday Sevens post!  At least they are still going though…and I keep seeing a few other bloggers do their posts regularly so that’s always nice to see too.

I feel like recently I’ve done more sewing than I have done in a while so I think I’m starting to get back into the swing of things. I’ve got a few future projects lined up that I’m excited to dig into.  I’ve been trying to get things done while Rosie takes her afternoon nap but sometimes she joins me by the sewing table as you will see below.  Here’s a couple of mid project photos.  Both projects will be blogged about soon!

Simplicity 8304 – View D – 2 Versions

When I made my #2018makenine plans earlier on in the year, they contained baby clothes.  Yep, that’s right…baby clothes for my baby.  Quite often I still think that it’s crazy that I’ve got the opportunity to make clothes for MY baby.  Well, Rosie is now 8 months old and apart from a couple of accessories, I’ve actually only made 2 clothing items for her.  We were given the Simplicity 8304 Baby Gear pattern as a gift and I loved the little dresses so much.  I decided that this would be my first venture into sewing for Rosie!

Introduction to Oils

For a little while now, we’ve been introducing ourselves to the world of Essential Oils and embracing them into our home and lifestyle. Despite being very skeptical to begin with, I must now admit that I am completely in love and am so interested in learning more about them and their uses.

Having a baby in the house has changed how I’ve been looking at certain things in life. One of my main goals is to move away from chemical living as much as I can. Whilst researching this, I came across Young Living, an Essential Oil company. I’d read a little bit about the company before so I started to do some research into their ethics and standards, and was VERY impressed with what I was reading. I initially wanted something to support my immune system as the seasons changed. Due to breastfeeding, I was very hesitant to take medication every day. Again…more research was done and I decided that I wanted to get started with a few oils and a diffuser. I went to my local supplier and got set up with a Premium Starter Kit, saving over $200!

I made it my aim to either use my oils or educate myself on oils every day after buying the kit. I have been so surprised at how many different uses they have. So that brings me to write this blog post. I want to share with you what Essential Oils are!

Our 0-3 Month Old Essentials

As new parents we found it hard to decide what we needed for Rosie.  Most of my pregnancy was spent researching products and deciding what to buy.  I came across quite a few posts that would list items but not say why they were useful.  So here I am making my own little post sharing why we loved these items.  If you have any more suggestions, please leave them in the comments below. I would love to hear what worked for you too!

When we came home with Rosie, we camped out in our living room with this Pack N Play.  When looking for things for her to sleep in, we wanted something that was easy to move and practical.  We liked this Graco Pack N Play with the napper as the bassinet flipped over into a little reclined seat.  My thought was that if she didn’t like napping in one of the options, there were 2 more to try!  Over time, she progressed from napping in the bassinet to sleeping on the big mattress underneath.  I think this was great for us to use to transition her into her own bedroom crib.  Another well used feature was the changing mat.  We could get all of our supplies in the pockets at the side and the mat itself was completely waterproof, which we were glad of multiple times!

An Update About Me!

I decided to update my ‘about’ page so thought I would also publish it as a little blog post too. Enjoy!

A little while ago I began blogging about what my life was like after we moved over to Alabama from the UK. The blog mainly consisted of posts about what I was currently making and eating. Over time, Threads & Bobbins has evolved to be a broad Lifestyle blog with my sewing projects at the core.

I’ve been sewing for a while, dipping in and out of projects whenever time has allowed. Back in school, I completed my Textiles course and did reasonably well. My Grandma had always helped me with projects I had in mind growing up so I feel like sewing has just always been in my life. More recently, I’ve been sewing some of my own clothes…some of which have been great and others not so. But that’s one of the things I love about sewing; it’s a huge learning curve and with every garment I face new challenges.

Bibs & Burp Cloths

A little while ago I shared some of my plans for baby related sewing projects. I had planned on trying to get at least one of each made before Rosie arrived but that didn’t quite go to plan with me being put on bedrest. Even though I started with the simplest make in terms of skill, I couldn’t sit at the sewing machine for any longer than 20 minutes at a time so it took me quite a while to make 6 sets.

I wanted to experiment with different fabric weight combinations and had a bunch of suitable fabric to test out. I had simple cotton flannel,  terry knit jersey & polar fleece.

I used this pattern for the burp cloths and this one for the bibs. I had also read a few other tutorials to give me an idea of what fabrics would be the best for absorbency. I decided to pair 2 pieces of cotton flannel together and also flannel with a layer of quilting batting & jersey. I also combined the fleece with cotton flannel.

The construction was quite simple for both and I would definitely recommend both patterns if you are a sewing newbie. These were sewn right sides together, turned the right way round and then top stitched.  Before turning, I used pinking shears to trim the seam allowance down. On the thickest set I trimmed the seam allowances differently on each fabric to reduce the bulk when they were turned the right way around.
